First introduced as a beta a year ago, field history tracking for the User object becomes generally available in Winter '27.
Where
Setup, under User Management Settings: enable User Field History Tracking. Note the toggle label still says Beta even though the feature is GA.
How
After enabling the setting, configure which User fields to track, up to 20. Changes to tracked fields are then recorded in field history the same way as on other objects.
Why
The User object drives access, licensing, and routing, yet changes to it were historically invisible. Tracking profile swaps, role moves, and deactivations gives admins and auditors an answer to the recurring question of who changed a user record and when.
